Travel eSIM Explained: How It Works and How to Choose One (2026)
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you download before your trip. You keep your normal SIM for calls and texts and use the eSIM for mobile data abroad – usually far cheaper than roaming.
1Check that your phone supports eSIM
Most recent iPhones, Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy phones do, but the phone must also be carrier-unlocked. Check your phone's settings or the provider's compatibility list.
2Choose between a fixed amount of data and “unlimited”
Fixed-data plans are often cheapest. “Unlimited” plans usually have fair-use limits and sometimes no hotspot – our comparison lists the published limits.
3Pick a country or regional plan
One country is cheapest; a regional plan (e.g. Europe) is easier if you cross borders.
4Install it before you leave
Install over Wi-Fi at home via QR code or the app, but activate data roaming for the eSIM only when you land (or when the plan says it starts).
5Keep your normal number for calls
Leave your home SIM on for calls/SMS if you need them, but turn off its data roaming to avoid charges.
6Top up or buy more data in the app
Most providers let you add data without a new installation.
