How to Choose a VPN in 2026: 7 Checks Before You Pay
A VPN encrypts your connection on public Wi-Fi and hides your IP address from the sites you visit. It does not make you anonymous and it does not replace antivirus. If that is what you need, these seven checks will keep you away from bad deals and shady apps.
1Insist on an independent no-logs audit
Any VPN can claim “no logs”. Prefer providers whose policy has been checked by an outside auditor – our VPN comparison lists who audited whom and when.
2Check where the company is based
The jurisdiction decides which laws apply to your data. Countries with strong privacy laws (e.g. Switzerland) are a plus; we show the company location for every VPN.
3Count your devices
Plans range from 5–10 simultaneous devices to unlimited. A family with phones, laptops and a TV quickly needs more than five.
4Look at the network for your use
For streaming or travel, check that the provider has servers in the countries you need and modern protocols such as WireGuard.
5Read the money-back terms
Most good VPNs offer 30 days or more. Test speed and streaming during that window and cancel if it disappoints.
6Be careful with “free”
Unknown free VPN apps often finance themselves with your data. If you want free, use a reputable provider's free plan (see our free VPN list).
7Ignore the biggest discount – compare renewal prices
Long plans look cheap in year one; check what you pay after renewal before you commit.
