How to Switch from LastPass to a Safer Password Manager (2026)

After the 2022 LastPass breach, in which encrypted customer vaults were stolen, many people moved on. Switching takes about 20 minutes. The key idea: export, import, verify – and then change the passwords that matter most.

1Pick the new password manager first

Choose before you export, so the file with your passwords exists for as short a time as possible. Our comparison ranks Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton Pass and NordPass.

2Export your LastPass vault

Use LastPass's export function on a computer you trust. It creates a CSV file with your passwords in plain text – treat it like cash.

3Import into the new app

Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton Pass and NordPass all offer an import option for LastPass files. Follow the new app's import guide.

4Check that everything arrived

Compare the number of items and spot-check important logins, notes and 2FA settings.

5Delete the export file securely

Delete the CSV and empty the trash/recycle bin. Don't leave it in Downloads or cloud folders.

6Change your most important passwords

Start with email, banking and anything that reuses passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication where possible.

7Close the LastPass account

Once you are sure everything works, delete the old vault so it can't be accessed later.
