How to use it

  1. Enter your net income and choose the period.
  2. Choose how many people you have a legal duty to support (spouse, children).
  3. Read the garnishable amount and what you keep.

How does wage garnishment work?

With a wage garnishment, the employer pays the garnishable part of the net wage directly to the creditor. What is garnishable follows from § 850c ZPO: income up to the exemption limit is protected, and above it only a share is taken – the more dependants, the more remains free.

The limits are adjusted every year on 1 July. For maintenance claims stricter rules apply and the court sets the amount the debtor keeps.

P-account: protection for your bank account

A garnishment-protection account (P-Konto) automatically protects the basic exemption. People who pay maintenance or receive child benefit can get a certificate for a higher amount. Recognised debt-counselling services help for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the exemption limit in 2026?

From 1 July 2026 the basic exemption is €1,587.40 net per month. It rises by €597.42 for the first and €332.83 for each further dependant (up to five).

Is everything above the limit garnishable?

No. Of the amount above the exemption, a share remains free: 3/10 for you, 2/10 for the first and 1/10 for each further dependant. Income above €4,866.30 per month is fully garnishable.

Does this apply to my bank account?

A garnishment-protection account (P-Konto) protects at least the basic exemption automatically; higher amounts need a certificate.
