Frequently asked questions
Why is my net raise so much smaller?
Each extra euro is taxed at your marginal rate and social contributions are added – for typical incomes roughly 50–60 % of a raise remains net.
Can a raise lower my net pay?
No. The German income tax is progressive in steps of the income, never on the whole income, so more gross always means more net. Benefits that depend on income can change, though.
What is a good raise?
To keep purchasing power, a raise should at least match inflation. In salary talks, a figure of 3–10 % with reasons (new tasks, market salary) is common.
