Frequently asked questions
How is the due date calculated?
Usually with Naegele's rule: first day of the last period plus 280 days (40 weeks), adjusted if your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days. Only about 4% of babies are born exactly on the due date.
How long is maternity protection in Germany?
6 weeks before the due date and 8 weeks after birth – 12 weeks after premature or multiple births or if the child has a disability. During this time you receive maternity pay.
When do I have to request parental leave?
At the latest 7 weeks before it begins, in writing to your employer. If it should start straight after maternity protection, that is about one week after the birth.
