Stopping distance (rule of thumb)
–

Rules of thumb (German driving test): reaction distance = (v/10) × 3, braking distance = (v/10)², emergency braking = half of that. Physics: v·t + v² ÷ (2·μ·g). Real distances depend on tyres, brakes and load.

Frequently asked questions

What is the stopping distance at 50 km/h?

Rule of thumb: 15 m reaction + 25 m braking = 40 m; with emergency braking about 27.5 m.

How much longer is the braking distance at double speed?

Four times – braking distance grows with the square of the speed.
