What a German invoice must contain

Under § 14 (4) UStG every invoice needs: names and addresses of you and your customer, your tax number or VAT ID, the invoice date, a sequential invoice number, quantity and type of service, the date of supply, the amount broken down by tax rate, the tax rate and amount – or a note on an exemption such as § 19 UStG – and the total.

For small invoices up to €250 gross, simplified details are enough.

Payment QR: get paid faster

The EPC QR code (GiroCode) contains the transfer details. Customers scan it in their banking app and recipient, IBAN, amount and reference are pre-filled – fewer typos, faster payment.

Frequently asked questions

What must a German invoice contain?

Under § 14 (4) UStG: full name and address of supplier and customer, tax number or VAT ID, invoice date, a unique invoice number, quantity and description of the goods/services, date of supply, net amount, VAT rate and amount (or a note on the exemption), and the gross amount.

Is this an e-invoice?

No – a PDF is not an e-invoice in the sense of the German B2B rules (XRechnung/ZUGFeRD). Since 2025 businesses must be able to receive e-invoices; issuing becomes mandatory in stages (2027/2028), with exceptions e.g. for small amounts and small businesses.
