Statutory periods per § 622 BGB. Employment contracts and collective agreements may set longer (or, in collective agreements, shorter) periods – these take precedence. Employees' periods may not be longer than the employer's. The notice must be in writing (signed on paper, § 623 BGB); email or messenger is not valid. What counts is the date of receipt. Not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the statutory notice period in Germany?

4 weeks to the 15th or the end of a calendar month. For dismissals by the employer the period increases with length of service – up to 7 months to the end of a month after 20 years.

Does the employee's period also increase?

Not by law. Only the employer's periods increase with service; many contracts extend them to both sides, which is allowed.

Can I give notice by email?

No. A notice of termination requires written form with a handwritten signature (§ 623 BGB). Email, fax or WhatsApp are not valid.
